Islam is a religion, but not in the western meaning of religion. The western connotation of the term religion is something very personal, whether one believes in God or not. Muslims made great advances in many different fields such as astronomy, geography, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, architecture and linguistics. Muslim scholars played an important role in world progress, most notably in Europe's age of exploration. It is interesting to note that Islam so strongly urges mankind to study and explore the universe. For example, the holy Quran states:
