“Introduction
Islam is a religion, but not in the western meaning of religion. The western connotation of the term religion is something very personal, whether one believes in God or not. But Islam organizes our relation with God, with our family, relatives, neighbors and with other brethren. Islam clearly establishes our duties and rights in those relationships.
Islam is a complete code of life it establishes a clear system of worship, laws of marriage and divorce, laws of inheritance, code of behavior, law of war and peace and the laws of economics etc.
Islam is not practiced in the mosque only, it is for daily life, a guide to life in all its aspects; socially, economically and politically. Thus, Islam is a complete constitution. It is quite logical and rational.
There is not a class of clergy in Islam; nor is there celibacy. Islam is the complete way of human life. The message of Islam is meant for the entire world and anyone who aCCepts this message becomes a Muslim. From the very beginning Islam had a universal message for all people.
In the Quran Allah teaches human beings they were created in order to worship him. Since the teachings of Islam encompass all aspects of life and ethics, God-consciousness is encouraged in all human affairs. Islam makes it clear that human acts are acts of worship if they are done for God alone and in aCCordance to His Devine law.
Seeking knowledge is obligatory in Islam for every Muslim, man and woman. The main source of Islam, the Quran and the Sunnah (Prophets Muhammed’s traditions) encourage Muslims to seek knowledge and to be scholars, since this is the best way for people to know Allah. Muslims were therefore, eager to seek knowledge, both religious and secular and within a hundred years of Muhammad’s mission, a great civilization sprang up and flourished. Muslims made great advances in many different fields such as astronomy, geography, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, architecture and linguistics. Muslim scholars played an important role in world progress, most notably in Europe’s age of exploration. It is interesting to note that Islam so strongly urges mankind to study and explore the universe. For example, the holy Quran states:
