“PREFACE
Today Arabic is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organisation (UNO) and is spoken by a large group of masses in Asia and Africa. During the heyday of Islamic civilisation, it was the leading language of the world and occupied an international position similar to that of English in these days. In contains rich cultural inheritance apart from its excellent ability for expressing the human thoughts in a lucid style. Above all, it is the holy language of Islam and as such, it has been studied in every nook and comer of the world as a language of a great religion and civilization.
After the discovery of Odin most of the Arab states, Arabic studies throughout the world got a new momentum because of the political, cultural, strategic and economic importance of the region. India, too, did not lag behind in this respect. Besides the government, tens of thousands of the people irrespective caste and creed devoted attention in gaining the practical knowledge of Arabic. As the same time, Arabic was included as one of the important curricular subjects in the syllabi of various educational institutions including university. Furthermore, some special Arabic learning centres were set up across the country with a view to preparing students for availing the growing job opportunity in the Arab world.
Now-a-days, in addition to the Arab land, there are numerous job facilities in non-Arab countries as well. In India, for instance, an increasing number of scopes for the learners of Arabic have been created in various private and government educational institutions, foreign ministry, defense ministry, diplomacy, radio, television, internet, journalism, tourism, interpretation, different multinational companies and in the ounces of the intelligence bureaus in addition to the Arab embassies situated in New Delhi.
This book has been designed for the learners of Arabic at different stages, particularly for the beginners. English transliteration of the original Arabic terms has also been provided so that the general readers, who are interested to be acquainted with the Arabic language without having its alphabetic knowledge, may too be benefited alike.
The terminologies of the book have been collected from dictionaries, newspapers, periodicals and different reference sources. Need-less to mention that it contains some unique chapters such as phrase & Idiom, Abbreviation, proverb & Maxim, Computer Term, Grammatical Term etc. which will definitely be appreciated by the readers. Besides, some Quranic verses and gems of the prophetic sayings are used in order to introduce the readers with the language of the holy Qur’an and Hadith.
I am confident that a thorough study of this book will not only enrich the vocabulary of the reader but also will provide a base and working knowledge of modern Arabic language and will encourage him to undertake further study of the same.
This is my modest attempt in the yield of writing. I have tried my level best to bring the book up to the mark and make it free from error. But since no man is perfect there may be some mistakes. I will remain ever grateful if the readers point out the mistakes and shortcomings.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our most compassionate teacher Prof. A.M. Bhuiya, Deptt. of Arabic, Assam University, who not only managed to very minutely check the final proof of this book but also was kind enough to write a valuable foreword.
