The time is highly precious. It is very short. For life, movement is essential. For movement peace is essential and remember, peace cannot be kept by force. It can be only achieved by understanding, adjustment and compromise. Now, we should be ready for total and complete surrender to God, complete surrender to God means deliberate efforts to leave our problem in the hands of God and becoming fearless. But remember your attitude determine your altitude. Be large at Heart and succeed, and be small at Heart and fail. Remember, discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation or a system. Be honest and be frank. See, false man bows before power, the true man bows before argument. No one puts out other peoples lamp, it is the lack of oil which puts them out. If you have excuse, I assure you, you and we have excuses, don't use it. No one is so powerful that he can harm others, without harming himself. Self-knowledge is the beginning of self-improvement. We may have problems, starve the problems feed the opportunity. We should not miss the golden opportunities provided today. Do you know, great minds discuss ideas, medium ones discuss events and poor mind discuss people. We the Unani fraternity is discussing people, people and only people. The greatest courage on earth is to bear defeat without loosing heart. Forget that envy never makes holiday. The secret of success for a person, for a system or for a group is to be able to make most reasonable decisions on the most emotional occasions. It is the most valuable time to initiate. Come forward and tie a knot on ""Impossible"". We will make impossible, surely ""Possible"". A candle lights others and consumes itself. We should be ready for this. Creation is the introduction of creator. Have trust in God right up till the end. Lip service is not a proof of real attachment. Be practical. Then see what happens. Whatever will happen, will be the will of the God, Almighty.
Remember, my brother, no body wants an intelligent officer in his or her subordination then what to do. Don't surpass your superiors and restrain your showmanship. Otherwise, we will have to face a lot of problems in the world, in the field, in the system and even in our day to day activities. So take life as an ocean of joy and sorrow.
Brother, have a mission in life. He who does not have a mission in life is the poorest of all. A man without imagination is like a bird without wings.
India has a rich, centuries old heritage of medical and health sciences. The philosophy and fundamentals of Unani system of medicine as well as Unani medical science enunciated by Hippocrate (460-375 BC), Galen ( 131 -210 AD), Rhazes (865-925 AD) and Avicenna (980- 1037 AD) bear testimony to our ancient tradition in the field of scientific health care a holistic approach which took into of our people. It was naturally, account of all aspects of human health and disease. Over centuries, Pre Mughal and the Mughal period and with the intrusion of foreign influences and mingling of culture during British period, the Unani system of medicine evolved and continued to be practised widely in the country.
Every society has well established knowledge, beliefs and practices relating to the promotion of positive health and avoidance of sickness. In an old civilization and culture as that of our country India, the store of such knowledge is bound to be very rich and time tested. Most of this was originated in India, and part of it with foreign origin, became Indian by its continuous and regular use in the life and health behavior of a large section of the population of the country. It is adopted as Unani system of medicine. Now famous as Indian system of Unani medicine and becomes a part of the culture and tradition of our country. Irrespective of the phenomenal growth and development of modem allopathic system of scientific medicine, the only medical practices used for health care and treatment of sickness in India, were largely, what we now call as ""Traditional system of indigenous medicine"". Ayurved, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems of medicine and drugless therapies like Yoga and Naturopathy are officially recognized in India.
Even today, hakeems and vaids etc. are providing health care to the people. This indicates that in addition to the existing dominant system of allopathic medicine, there exists another form of health care coverage in the country. It is this reality that makes Government of India, the health planners to think seriously of the contribution that traditional Indian systems of medicine including Unani are making. Now, it has been included in the National Health Policy, known as National Health Care policy and programmes on I.S .M.
The Indian Systems, one feels sorry to see, are languishing because we seem to stick to what was said several thousands year ago. The point of pride is only our being ancient. In my opinion, it is not a matter of pride to be ancient. There may be scientific research that might be done in Unani system of medicine, but there is no proper documentation, there is no proper demonstration, there is no proper application, there is no proper monitoring. So the research is neither proved nor disproved. There is nothing which can be definitely said about any research that takes place in Unani system or other Indian systems of medicine. So it is quite necessary to have a permanent, well organized scientific research based on our system. The Government of India concern to give a scientific base to Unani System is well known. Several concrete steps like opening of educational institutions organizing of Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine opening of scientific laboratories for maintaining standards, initiating clinical research through Intra Mural and Extra Mural Research Schemes (IMP & EMR) and regulating production and sale of Unani medicine are being contemplated by enforcing laws .
Our country is bestowed with a treasure of medicinal plants. The supply base of about 90% herbal raw material/drugs are used in the manufacture of Ayurved, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems of medicine.
The only thought present in my mind while compiling this book was to bring all that is good and beneficial to health of masses. The diversity of our culture, religion and life style extends to our medical systems as well. It is a matter of surprise that whether any other culture in this world be blessed with such diverse treatment regimes or medical systems that teach them not only how to fight disease but also how to keep fit. Several other curing system are being followed by our countrymen viz Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopaty and even Amchi system of medicine but Allopathy is drawing the maximum number of admirers. Now with great resources, great support and keen interest shown by new young Unani graduates, various Government and non-Government sectors have also initiated developmental work in this system. Unani Systems is also reviving it's lost glory and is gaining popularity as a scientific system of Unani medicine.
A peep into the past shows that the Humoural concept of vitality or weakness of the body fluid is as rational today as it was in the past. The theory, the concept, the fundaments of this Unani medical science is as scientific today as it ever was. I have tried to collect all these in this book to make the book memorable. There are a lot of misconceptions in this science because no rationalization is possible without sufficient experimental work. Thus, the concise manner in which medical science based on the Humoral theory is rationalised, is only the observation of experiments and clinical manifestations developed on the basis of logic, produced as compendium of medical science. A score of years ago, a literature of this type would have appeared as pseudo exposition of a system of medicine that existed only to get buried in deep. But now, balanced scientists, in view of the aims of the Unani medical science and the healing art will not hesitate to confess. ""We have not advanced much"" but the little advancement cannot progress further towards the aim without an inspiration from the literature of past. It is to this end that I have taken an initiative to work. The work/book has been written in response to numerous requests from Unani medical students, teachers and researchers for a handy and concise manual.
The Unani system of medicine mainly dealt with the plant, mineral, ocean and animal origin drugs. I have tried to include some classified details about the single drugs used in Unanipathy in a very different manner, I hope this will be appreciated.
I am confident that this book, surely will prove extremely useful to all those who are interested in gaining, preserving, maintaining, developing, propagating and globalizing the knowledge about Unani system of medicine, and Unani medical science (Unanipathy).
