Preface
In view of the long-felt need for an English-to-English-to Urdu dictionary I have fried to revise one and am happy to make it available to the readers.
There have been revolutionary developments in the fields of science, literature and technology, and the influence of mass media has added new dimensions to our life styles. The extent to which English has spread is really marvellous, Urdu, as a living language, has to keep abreast of the time and its demand. Special pains have been taken to include upto-date and aCCurate scientific and technical terms with their various nuances. A large number of idiomatic expressions and phrases have been incorporated for the sake of greater clarity.
The selection of vocabulary has been made largely on the basis of frequency of oCCurrence, lt has been my primary object to include as many useful words as possible within the available space. The word stock should thus be adequate to help the reader understand and express in these two widely spoken languages.
A Dictionary is the only source of information and expression of human mind through language, which is a transparent medium for the transmission of thought. It has been due consistent effort of our lexicographers to increase our knowledge in the context of our life and society. We are proud to possess remarkable and voluminous works on Arabic, Persian and Urdu lexicography. It is my duty to acknowledge a sense of gratitude to our scholars, who laid down the basis for English-Urdu studies.
